年に2回、「JLPT」という日本語検定があり、私は7月に1番難しいレベルである『N1』を受験します。この数カ月間、日本語を猛勉強しているので、その感想を届けたいです。

まず、日本語のオノマトペは面白いと思います。英語にもオノマトペはありますが、日本語とは違い、「Bang（バン！）」など音だけを表します。日本語のオノマトペはもっと曖昧で、感情や状態などいくつもの表現があり、さまざまな気持ちがより伝わります。そのため、日本語でしか表現できない気持ちもあるのではないでしょうか。例えば、英語で「もやもや」の意味を説明しても、その微妙なニュアンスまで伝えるのは難しいです。学習の中でこうした表現を覚えると、日本の感覚をより身近に感じることができ、とても楽しいです。

一方で、困ることもあります。日本語は主語を省きがちな言語ですが、英語では主語をはっきり述べないと意味が伝わりにくくなります。そのため、英語を母語とする私は、日本語の長い文章を読んだり会話を聞いたりすると、内容が分かりにくく感じることがあります。

このように、私にとって難しい日本語ですが、諦めずに勉強を続けます。外国語を勉強している皆さんも一緒に頑張りましょう！

Twice every year, a Japanese language proficiency exam called the “JLPT” is held in Japan, and I will be taking the most difficult level (N1) this July. As such, I have been studying Japanese like mad these past few months, and I would like to offer my thoughts on studying Japanese.

First of all, I think Japanese onomatopoeia are very interesting! Although there are onomatopoeia in English, they differ from the ones found in Japanese, as they tend to only describe noises such as “BANG.” Japanese onomatopoeia in comparison are ambiguous, as they express much more, such as emotions and circumstantial situations, conveying a wider plethora of sentiments. Being the case, I think there are several sentiments that can only be described in Japanese. For example, even if you try to explain the Japanese word “moya moya” in English, you just cant quiet capture and convey its subtle nuance. And so, I feel elated when I learn these words through my studies, as I feel closer to understanding the way of thinking in Japan.

On the other hand, there were also times of frustration. The Japanese language tends to omit the main subject, whereas in English if you don’t state the main subject you become harder to understand. As such, as someone whose first language is English, I find it hard to understand passages and conversations the longer they become.   

This is one way how Japanese is challenging for me. However, I do not intend to give up, and will continue to keep studying. Let’s all do our best studying foreign languages together!
