アメリカと日本のクリスマスには大きな違いがあることはよく知られていますが、実は欧米諸国の中でもクリスマスの過ごし方はさまざまです。ここでは、いくつかの国のユニークなクリスマスの文化をご紹介します。

北米では、クリスマス当日にプレゼントを開け、家族でハムや七面鳥、マッシュポテト、クランベリーソースなどを食べるのが一般的です。

私の家族の出身である南米ではクリスマス・イブに家族と過ごします。食事にはパエリアがよく食べられます。

また、フランスでは、クリスマス料理が豪華です。前菜にフォアグラや牡蠣、メインにローストチキンをシャンパンやワインと共に楽しみ、デザートには伝統的な「ブッシュ・ド・ノエル」を味わいます。

ドイツには、日本の秋田県に伝わる「なまはげ」に似た興味深い文化があります。「クランプス」と呼ばれる鬼に扮した人々が街を練り歩き、こどもたちを怖がらせながら諭して回るのです。

このように、国や地域によってクリスマスの祝い方はさまざまです。

I think it's known that American and Japanese Christmas differ from each other, but did you know that the way people celebrate Christmas also differ among Western Countries? Here, I would like to introduce some of those difference is Christmas customs.

In North America, it is typical to open presents on Christmas Day, and eat roasted ham, mash potatoes and cranberry sauce with your families.

In South America where my family is from, families gather on Christmas Eve. And they often eat Paella.

Also, the Christmas cuisine in France is quite extravagant. They eat Foie Gras and oyster as an appetizer, and have roasted chicken paired with champagne as the main course. Then they enjoy a traditional dessert called "Yule Log."

In Germany, there's a very interesting custom that's strikingly similar to Akita Prefecture's "Namahage." People dress up as a demon called "Krampus," and parade around the city scaring and chiding children.

These are ways how Christmas customs vary depending on the region.
