みなさんはSDGsをご存じだと思いますが、今回は目標12の「2030年までにゴミの発生量を大きく減らす」というターゲットについて書きたいと思います。

先日、エコプラザを訪問して、佐賀市がごみを燃やした際に発生する熱を利用して、廃棄物発電に取り組んでいることを学びました。

このような廃棄物発電施設は、アメリカにも存在するのか気になったので、調べたところ、日本には404施設ありましたが、アメリカには、広大な国土を持つにもかかわらず、75施設しかないことがわかりました。アメリカの一人あたりのゴミ排出量は日本より多いこともふまえると、対応として十分とはいえない状況です。

とはいえ、アメリカ政府もこの問題を認識していて、さまざまな対策を打ち出しています。例えば、昨年は米国環境保護庁（EPA）が「プラごみを防ぐ国策」を策定しました。これは前向きな一歩です。

ごみ問題の解決には、佐賀市や他の都市の先進的な事例から学ぶことが重要だと感じています。また、ごみを減らす工夫は、私たちの日々の暮らしの中にたくさん隠れています。

持続可能な社会を作るために、できることを見つけて取り組んでいきましょう。

I'm sure everyone knows what SDGs are, but I would like to specifically talk about Goal 12's target of "greatly reducing waste production by 2030."

The other day, I visited Saga City's Eco Plaza, where I learned that they are able to use the heat from burning waste to generate electricity!

I then became curious if such a Waste to Energy facility also exists in America. I found out that despite being a large country, America only has 75 of these facilities, while Japan has 404!
This is on top of the fact that America's waste per capita is higher than Japan's, so you might say that U.S. efforts are lacking.
Nevertheless, the U.S. government has acknowledged this issue and is implementing various policies. For example, last year the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) issued the "National Strategy to Prevent Plastic Pollution," which is a positive step forward.

In order to resolve the issue of waste pollution, I believe it is important to learn from the precedent set by the advanced practices of places like Saga City. Also, I believe that there are many ways we as individuals can reduce waste reduction in our daily lives.

Let us all work together to find ways to create a more sustainable society!
